Ibsen has a way of getting to the humanity of slightly broken people and revealing truths about extraordinary situations that people unwittingly get themselves into. Hedda is no exception, for some reason she has chosen a completely unsuitable husband. Suitable in the sense that he offers prospects of earning money and providing her with a lifestyle that she was accustomed to as “a General’s daughter”, but unsuitable in the respect that he bores her rigid. How many marriages have suffered this fate! Ibsen then chooses to show how destructive the human mind can become as the characters engage in power games that go horribly wrong.
