2Magpies Theatre: Ventoux
Ventoux restages the 2000 Tour de France stage on Mont Ventoux, and the epic battle between Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani on the most fearsome mountain in France. The mountain symbolises their mutual obstacles (Armstrong’s cancer and Pantani’s career threatening injury), and is a challenge both must overcome to become Tour de France winners. Taking on Ventoux in 2000 was the first year they came to head on head. Everything changed for Armstrong and Pantani following this race – Armstrong went on to win 7 consecutives tours, and Pantani was driven to suicide in a hotel room in Italy.
Ventoux restages this race knowing everything that we now know. The race is recreated using a pair of road bikes, real race commentary and stunning footage filmed on location by the company. The race flashes backwards to their early careers, and forwards to after this race, giving the audience the benefit of hindsight. We’d describe the show as a storytelling-led contemporary performance, driven by a strong factual narrative. This both draws our audience in, whilst giving them the opportunity to experience a style of performance they may not have seen before.
